The Georgia Day Banner and Art Competition is now closed and winners will be announced during the Georgia Day online program on February 12.
In lieu of the annual, in-person banner competition, GHS will host two virtual competitions for Georgia Day 2021. In addition to the popular classroom banner competition, GHS will also host an art contest for individual students.
Beginning in January, Georgia students will have opportunities to compete with their peers across the state by creating original artwork on the Focus of Study, “Georgia Leaders on the World Stage.” After being reviewed and judged for their creativity and use of Festival educational resources including new GHS Historical Investigations, submissions will be featured online and through GHS social media. All submissions are due by February 1, 2021 See the guidelines below for more information.
Banner and Art Competition Theme: “Georgia Leaders on the World Stage,” exploring Georgia leaders with national political and social impact from the beginning of Georgia history through the late 20th century.
Potential topics to explore for the Banner and Art Competitions can include:
- Examine the social and political impact of one or more of the following Georgia leaders: President Jimmy Carter, Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., Senator Richard Russell, and Congressman John Lewis
- Examine the social and political impact of your community’s leaders from the late twentieth century including politicians, activists, philanthropists, artists, educators, health officials, or others from across Georgia.
- Examine the social and political impact of leaders from throughout Georgia history including but not limited to General James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, Juliette Gordon Low, or Jackie Robinson.

Georgia Day Classroom Banner Competition Guidelines (For Classrooms/Groups)
**Digital art created by students can be utilized to create a digital banner design. If creating a digital banner design, please keep in mind that, according to the banner guidelines, the entries must be an original design and represent student work.
- The banner competition is open to any group or classroom of students attending public, private, parochial, or home schools in Georgia in grades K-8.
- Entry is free.
- Each banner entry must be an original design.
- Each banner should be designed to be carried or hung on a wall.
- Banner entries should represent student work guided by adults.
- Banners must conform to the following measurements:
- Maximum size–72′′x 36′′
- Minimum size–56′′x 28′′5
- Banners will be judged on these criteria:
- Interpretation of Theme
- Originality
- Creativity, Neatness
- Overall Presentation
- Banners from previous years and school banners are not eligible for judging.
- Banners must be submitted as an image or with multiple images (You may submit up to three images per banner. You may also submit an additional photo of your students with their banner resulting in no more than four image submissions per banner).
- Banner images must be in .jpg or .png format.
- By submitting images to GHS, you are transferring the right to use or reproduce images of banners, including images with people, in GHS publications and on all GHS social media platforms.
- Banners will be judged by GHS staff members.
- Deadline for submission is February 1, 2021.
Georgia Day Art Competition (For Individual Students)
- The art competition is open to any individual student attending public, private, parochial, or home school in Georgia in grades K-12.
- Entry is free and limited to one per student.
- Each entry must be an original design.
- The art contest is for drawings/illustrations, paintings, digital works, fine art photography, mixed media, and sculpture.
- Art entries should be original, student-made work that does not infringe on copyrighted material.
- Art entries can be any size but must be submitted as high-resolution image or PDF document.
- Art will be judged on these criteria:
- Interpretation of Theme
- Originality
- Creativity, Neatness
- Overall Presentation
- Art must be submitted as a high-resolution image(s) (You may submit up to three images per art entry. You may submit an additional photo of yourself with your art resulting in no more than four image submissions per art piece).
